The "First Time" Contractor:

There are several real positives into contracting but some decisions on what route you take to get there can be equally important:

Umbrella Company - An umbrella company is an easy and effective way to get working and is set-up quite often by a firm of accountants who employs you as an employee, charges you a weekly / monthly fee in return for invoicing, VAT returns, general tax issues and book-keeping.  We would advise any first time contractors to look at this option as it gives an insight in how it works and very often will lead to a limited company being set up.

Limited Company - Long term contractors generally use the services of a Limited Company and do this by buying / forming a limited company and becoming a Director of this company.  Contractors use their limited company as a 3rd party business-to-business agreement via Net Talent and are responsible for tax, VAT and all book-keeping administration by submitting yearly returns.  Limited Company's can be set up online, via Companies House or very easily via management companies on the www.

All Limited company contractors must have you, being the named Director in the company, have a UK bank account and the company must be registered in the UK.

The PCG (Professional Contractors Group) have a very informative guide / manifesto to contracting which includes important legislative advice - http://www.pcg.org.uk/cms/index.php

IR35 - Net Talent aim to make our contracts as IR35 compliant as possible although we offer no guarantee therefore we advise for your own peace of mind that you seek your own advice.  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ir35/faq.htm

Visa Information - To apply and undertake work in any of our clients you must be in possession of a valid work permit and will be asked to provide evidence of this when required.  Any additional advice can be found on the following link to The Home Office - http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk

Timesheet Process / Pay Frequency - Net Talent can pay weekly or monthly and this will be clear in the contract.

Candidate Care - At Net Talent we believe in offering a first class recruitment experience to all of our clients, candidates and contractors alike and there feel that day you start with us should be the start of an excellent contracting experience.  The contractor care process is:

  • Day 1 check-in call, if local we will endeavour to walk you to your assignment
  • Day 5 review.
  • Week 3 care-call
  • Week 6 care-call
  • Two weeks prior to your assignment we will attempt to initiate extensions with the end client on your behalf or begin the process of pro-actively working on finding your next assignment.  We want to retain you for all future contracts if this is possible.

Although this is our "SLA" to you please be aware that we are available at anytime to answer your questions.

Advice to contractors:

  • Please ensure that you adhere to any codes of conduct you may be requested to sign
  • Please produce all essential documentation that you are requested to do so prior to assignments, this might include:
    - Signed contracts
    - Visa documents
    - References
    - Proof of ID / Proof of residence

Please speak to one of our consultants in any case and we will help you all we can.
